Preview of Tri-C’s Health Careers and Technology Building

Friday, August 20th, 2010

SE Blueprint employees attended a special preview tour of the soon to be completed Tri-C Health Careers and Technology Building. Built to meet LEED silver standards, the building is 50% complete and is the newest addition to the Tri-C Eastern Campus. Upon completion it will use 30% less energy than a non-LEED building. It is one of six commissioned LEED projects for the College.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a rating system that provides an exact outline of how to design, construct and operate green buildings using methods that are practical and measurable. Based on points and prerequisites the system recognizes the environmental performance of buildings at four levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum.

Among some of the building’s most notable “green” features are:

  • 44% reduction in domestic water usage through use of low dual flush toilets
  • 34% energy cost savings. Sensors in each room detect lighting and body temperatures and automatically decrease the temperature in the room when it’s vacant. The sensors are also able to push more fresh oxygen into the rooms when required in order to help keep students alert.
  • 50% reduction in landscape watering. Rain will be collected and directed to the surrounding gardens including a roof top landscape, cisterns and rain garden.
  • 75% construction waste diverted from landfill and recycled or reused in the project.
  • 100% tobacco free project.  During construction all interior areas were built 100% free from tobacco smoke.  A fresh air blast will be done before sealing the building, keeping the air at peek quality.

Great Lakes Burning River Festival

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

The Great Lakes Burning River Festival was another huge success attracting over 10,000 people to the two day event.

The Burning River Fest celebrates environmental awareness and eco-friendly living. It is named after the infamous 1969 incident in which the Cuyahoga River caught on fire.

Local bands provided entertainment, several local vendors provided food and exhibits from area environmental groups and educational organizations were available for attendees to visit. This year the Great Lakes Brewing Company decided to brew 30 to 40 kegs of their most popular beer- Christmas Ale. The ale is normally only available for eight weeks in the winter.

All proceeds from the festival go to the Burning River Foundation, a nonprofit formed by Great Lakes Brewing to provide resources to sustain and protect regional waterways.

SE Blue printed all the large color format banners that lined the walkway to the festival.

The banners had environmental messages printed on them for attendees to read and consider while heading towards the main stage and Coast Guard station.

Local bands provided entertainment at various locations throughout the event.

SE Blue goes behind the scenes at a waste water treatment plant.

Monday, October 12th, 2009

SE Blue was treated to an inside look at the Morgan Waste Water Treatment Plant. Shook Construction and SE Blue are currently working on this project for the City of Cleveland’s Water Department. The renovation is just one of several water treatment plants being overhauled or updated by the City.

Kudos to Adam Wiebe at Shook who simplified the water treatment process so that it was easily understood by all. Who would have guessed that Lake Erie water could be turned into drinkable water!

“I generally just see the projects on paper. This was a wonderful opportunity to go behind the scenes and see the project in progress.” said Gena Koehler, sales manager at SE Blueprint.

The $26 million renovation involves the rehabilitation of drinking water filters, replacement of control and instrumentation panels as well as an overall facelift of the facility. For complete details on the Morgan Waste Water Treatment Plant renovations click here.

Looking to build green? We can help you qualify for LEED!

What is LEED?

LEED stands for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). It is rating system that provides an exact outline to building owners and operators how to design, construct and operate green buildings using methods that are practical and measurable.

Based on points and prerequisites the system recognizes the environmental performance of buildings at four levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum.

Why become certified?

It is true that building green does cost a little more upfront but the benefits and incentives far outweigh the added average 2% cost to your bottom line.

Health and Environmental Benefits:
Requirements make builders use their resources more efficiently
Healthier work and living environments
Improvement of air and water quality
Reduction of waste
Better health for employees
Healthier, cleaner community and environment

Bottom Line Benefits:
Tax credits and breaks
Expedited permitting
Free or reduced cost technical assistance
Grants and low interest loans

SE Blueprint’s role in LEED:

Our green policies and programs can help your business become LEED certified. There are nine key areas that LEED takes into account when adjudicating a company’s performance. We can help you earn your prerequisites and points in two of those categories.

Energy & Atmosphere
The Energy & Atmosphere category encourages a wide variety of energy strategies, one of which is the use of renewable and clean sources of energy. We are proud to say that all of our contracted delivery vehicles are hybrid models, saving energy and emissions into the environment and that our switch to energy-efficient lighting and the installation of skylights has dramatically cut our energy consumption. Plus our network of nationwide RSA (Reprographic Services Association) printers enables plans and documents to be printed at any one of our 120 network locations, reducing long distance delivery transportation emissions.

Materials & Resources
This category promotes the reduction of waste as well as reuse and recycling of materials and resources. Over the last few years we have reduced our landfill waste by 80% by switching to recycled bond paper and seeking out companies that were willing to take more of our waste to recycle. We even offer to pick up recyclable materials from our customers if they cannot recycle it, a commitment to the environment and our customers that we are proud of.

In contrast, many of our competitors have decided to use “going green” simply as a marketing tool. Touting their use of recycled bond for just ONE day, a competitor recently boasted that they were able to save a few hundred trees. Since our permanent switch to bond paper SE Blueprint has saved thousands of trees in the last two years and will always continue to look for new ways to provide our services more efficiently and effectively with as little impact to the environment as possible.

At SE Blueprint we understand that the response to environmental concern needs to begin somewhere. We take care in knowing that we are serving our clients with the quality products they expect and with the future well-being of our communities in mind.

Congratulations to these building owners who achieved Platinum Certification!

SE Blue in Properties Mag

SE Blueprint was featured in the Environmental Solutions section of the June 2009 issue of Properties Magazine! Entitled “Blueprints Go Green” the article outlines how we’re helping lead the way to a greener, more environmentally friendly industry while at the same time passing on the benefits to our clients.

Lean, Clean and Green.

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Many companies have been quick to jump on the “green” bandwagon claiming they’re “green” simply because they recycle the cans and glass from their lunch room.

At SE Blueprint we’ve made the commitment to ourselves, the company and the environment to make true changes in the way we do business in order to provide our clients with the quality products they expect while helping to improve the environment and our community.

Lean:

By securing relationships with recyclers capable of accepting a higher percentage of our printing waste we’ve reduced our landfill input by 90%. We also made the switch to printing all of our materials on recycled bond paper. These two changes have had a huge impact in the amount of waste we produce. As a result our dumpster, which used to be picked up every month, is now picked up every other month.

Clean:

To reduce our dependence on energy we installed skylights and switched to energy-efficient lighting and insist that our contracted delivery vehicles are hybrid vehicles.

Green:

Our network of nationwide RSA (Reprographic Services Association) printers enables plans and documents to be printed at any one of our 120 network locations. This saves our clients time and money and is at the same time a “green” initiative, reducing transportation emissions related to the usual long distance delivery of items.

As we continue to look for more sustainable ways to reduce our impact on the environment, we are proud that the changes we’ve made so far have already had such a huge impact. Choose to print with us and together we’ll make an even bigger impact!
