Great Lakes Burning River Festival

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

The Great Lakes Burning River Festival was another huge success attracting over 10,000 people to the two day event.

The Burning River Fest celebrates environmental awareness and eco-friendly living. It is named after the infamous 1969 incident in which the Cuyahoga River caught on fire.

Local bands provided entertainment, several local vendors provided food and exhibits from area environmental groups and educational organizations were available for attendees to visit. This year the Great Lakes Brewing Company decided to brew 30 to 40 kegs of their most popular beer- Christmas Ale. The ale is normally only available for eight weeks in the winter.

All proceeds from the festival go to the Burning River Foundation, a nonprofit formed by Great Lakes Brewing to provide resources to sustain and protect regional waterways.

SE Blue printed all the large color format banners that lined the walkway to the festival.

The banners had environmental messages printed on them for attendees to read and consider while heading towards the main stage and Coast Guard station.

Local bands provided entertainment at various locations throughout the event.

Known regionally and nationally for their unique micro and seasonal brews, most everyone already enjoys the taste of Great Lakes beer. Yet no matter how big they get they still remain a locally owned company that understands the importance of community and continually strive to operate in the “greenest” way possible. For that we salute them!

The brewing company was established in 1988 by brothers Patrick and Daniel Conway. It was Ohio’s first microbrewery and to date is its most celebrated, award winning brewery. The brothers have always been environmentally conscious and made sure to integrate this into their brewing processes as well as extending it to reach most every facet of their business. The Great Lakes Brewing Company calls their Green program the Triiple Bottom Line. The three “bottom lines” outline their environmental phiosophy: to engage in economic, social and environmental practices that achieve a sustainable, yet profitable, business.

A cool fact about their logo: The three waves in the company logo not only reflect this Triple Bottom Line philosophy, they represent a concerted effort to the respectful use of beer’s most valuable ingredient – water.

A reader recently recommended Mitchell’s Homemade ice cream located at four locations throughout the Cleveland area.

Mitchell’s Homemade was created by brothers Pete and Mike Mitchell in 1999. The unique three-step freezing process they use gives their ice cream that special homemade creaminess that everyone loves! Committed to the Cleveland community they support numerous community groups, youth athletic leagues and local charities. They are also proud Gold level sponsors of the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Northeast Ohio Affiliate®. As part of this effort, they hand-make their exclusive flavor, Pink Ribbon Peppermint Chip Ice Cream. Fifty cents of each pint of Pink Ribbon Peppermint Chip Ice Cream sold is donated to the organization.

With four locations throughout the Cleveland area it’s easy for you to make a trip to taste their delectable treats while at the same time supporting a local business and fulfilling our 3/50 Challenge! Some unique and delicious flavors to try: Coconut, Key Lime Pie, Banana Cream Pie and Blue Cosmo!

Locally owned and operated, we at SE Blueprint make an effort to keep it local!

Employing and supporting local area businesses, SE Blueprint has always emphasized the importance of community. We have made an impact through educational and environmental initiatives and always continue to seek out new ways to improve ourselves and our community.

That is why we support the 3/50 Project which promotes stronger local economies through support of independent retailers and the consumers who shop with them. The concept is so simple yet it makes such a huge impact.

We challenge you to take the month of September and give it a try. SE Blueprint is taking on the challenge and will share our newly discovered independent stores with you as we find them.

Our hope is that in taking on this challenge you might find a new favorite lunch spot, a great boutique that offers unique products made by area locals or an independent market that carries your favorite specialty items.

Make a difference, shop locally owned and operated stores!
